Travels To The Land Of Baskets And Amish

This past weekend was my annual girls getaway to Ohio. Two days of shopping till you drop. There were several things that I learned about myself this past weekend. One was I'm not the shop till you drop girl any more. I would see cute things, think about how or where would I use it, and then decided that it wasn't for me.
Makes it great for my wallet that's for sure.
Don't get me wrong, I did buy a few things but they were things that I needed for home: some potholders, an antique lamp, wine and more wine,  fabric to make some dog beds, and food. Lots and lots of food that are  made in Amish country.
I was looking for country ham to take home for the sons. I don't like it as much as they do but I thought it would be a great treat for them. I had to giggle when at an Amish food store I asked about it and was told that they don't carry that brand. No it's not a brand, it's a style. Sigh, I went to a second store and asked them about it. They looked at me like I was talking a foreign language. Talking with my friends on the bus, we decided it must be a southern thing and we were definitely in the north.
I do love the scenic views. Nothing but farms for miles and miles. It's easy to tell which ones are Amish. They are the ones that are white with no 'fancy' ornamentation at all on them including shutters.
The town we went to is definitely a tourist trap type town, in the middle of nowhere, making it's money on the presence of the large Amish population. My friend and I didn't want to spend the day shopping for chachies that would only collect dust. Instead we went antique shopping, finding treasures from the past. We talked about how when I was growing up, there was an antique store close to my grandmother's house but it wasn't called antiques then. Instead it was called the junk store. Many of the items I saw yesterday, were in the junk store of my youth. I did buy a cute crystal lamp that didn't have a shade. Not sure where I'm going to use it.
So much for not buying chachies.......

  1. I remember when I used to love to shop. I also remember when I used to have room to bring home treasures. Unfortunately, neither of those apply anymore. I would love to shoot photos in Amish country! Thank goodness pixels don't take up living space!

    1. Val, I did think of you when I went into the outlet fabric store. Two HUGE rooms of bargain fabric, some as low as 99cents a yard. I thought you would have fun spending money like you got it ;o)

  3. Glad you had a good time!, I've always thought Amish life must be really weird, the Amish must feel like they are on display all the time :)

  4. I would love to visit an armish town. But do they actually yet live like that or it is just for tourism? I cant imagine anyone at this day and age wants to live like that if it had nothing to do with money.

  6. Junk stores are way cheap than the antique shops!
On our way to Anna's there is an Amish restaurant and shopping mall. They are crazy money. I don't know how they can charge so much and stay in business.

    1. Sonya, there are some stores like that in this city too. Though one of our stops was a flea market and that's where I found some fabric at a REALLY good price.
