I will be the first to admit that this summer I have spent way too much time on facebook. But in my defense so have a lot of my friends. Every time I get on, they have posted something they found on the internet especially pinterest. Oh of course I think some of them are a great ideas, that the recipe sounds like it would be great to do someday, but in reality, I've just read about the different things, never trying them. However, a few nights ago, a friend had posted a pin she found about how to cut a watermelon. Made me snicker because I was like, "Really, cut a watermelon? Come on, I've seen everything!" But, being bored, I clicked on her link and followed it to a tutorial about how to cut it into perfect squares. Here's my 'Cliff Note' version :
 |
| Wash watermelon. Be careful, it was a slippery heavy burger. |
 |
| Cut into quarters |
 |
| slice in both directions on top |
 |
| Slice across on the side |
 |
| Remove center cubes, then run knife around inside of rind. |
 |
| Almost perfect cubes but not bad for my first attempt. |
Hum, guessing I need to get back on that bourbon trail to have something more interesting to blog about ;o)
Hahaha Bonnie, I actually have a quarter in my crisper waiting to be sliced up so I'll play, and do it your way. Who doesn't want nice neat cubes?

See Rose, my useless information turns out to be useful after all!
DeleteMy hubs was a chef and his stuff looks pretty when he cuts it. YOu do sort of the same thing with cantaloupe. You get it into quarters then make slices into the fruit and then just cut along the rind. And perfect cubes fall out. Or perfect cubes fall out when hubs does it. Mine is always a bit slanted.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try this the next time I get a cantaloupe. So like the squares better than the balls I use to try to make YEARS ago.
DeleteThe balls always looked great but looked like they were a massive pain in the butt.
DeleteOh they were, and you wasted so much of the melon that it wasn't economical for this penny pincher.
DeleteThat's the way I've been doing it for years, long before I had heard about Facebook, Pinterest, or even had a computer!
ReplyDeleteSigh Cora, I really never knew how to cut a watermelon. Seriously, growing up, it was treat that we would eat in one sitting. My dad would cut it into slices for each of us to have. Of course he would take the center out first and leave us the part around the rhine. When I married, hubby would only eat it if I took the seeds out first so I got pretty good at doing that but no cute pieces when you do that. Now that there are seedless watermelons, I just sliced and diced it willy-nilly until it was done. This way did go a lot faster!
Deleteseriously Bonnie you needed a tutorial for this?
ReplyDeleteyes, bourbon is needed.
buy seedless for hubby - that's what I always buy.
i hate the seeds.
Oh Peg if you could only see the mess I would make cutting a whole watermelon up. The juice was EVERYWHERE. Now it's contained to the rind which I can then pour out (or drink) before I throw away the rind.
DeleteMore bourbon trail is coming, if only in a recipe ;o)
Nice! I've always wanted to carve a pretty watermelon where it's hollowed out (I guess you'd have to use a melon baller) and has a zigzag edge. *heads off to Pinterest for ideas*
ReplyDeleteSo cool! I am gong to try this!
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know!!! We used to cut them in giant plate sized rings. Then either cut them in 4ths after that or eat them as a ring all to myself! We would eat them on the deck at my parents house. After we were done with them, we would attempt to whip them over the horse shed about 40-50 feet away from the deck. Some made it... THe roof of the shed looked gross for a while after that...
ReplyDeleteMy sister lives there now. I wonder if they still do that!
