It's been a wet beginning of summer here. Rain almost every day putting any thoughts of doing a day trip on hold. Finally, we decided that it was time to stop worrying about something as silly as a little bit of rain and out and about we went on a day trip.
Hubby and I have decided it's time to visit all the fine distilleries that are close to home. Well at least those that can make a good day trip. First one of the season was to Woodford Reserves. It was a beautiful drive there mainly because it's in the heart of horse country. We passed many horse farms on our way there. Oh how I wished we had stopped to take photos, but hubby was almost lost, so this wasn't a priority for him. Also made me happy for the GPS app on the cell phone. Ah the days of using a paper map are but a memory........
The grounds of this distillery are beautiful and well maintain. We did the tour if for no other reason, to get our free shot glass (with a shot of Woodford Bourbon included), all you can eat bourbon balls, and a free set of headphones!
The tour included most of the grounds, I tried to take a few pictures, but I was having fun listening to our guide, Steve. He had so many great stories about the surrounding land and buildings.
An interesting stone above a doorway in a building that was built before prohibition.
The welcome center and a shot of one of the beautiful gardens.
A very old building also built before prohibition. Notice the black on the stones and shutters? That's the residue from the angel's part. Apparently, angels like bourbon too! Angel's part? you wonder. Really? People who don't work at a distillery call it evaporation.
From looking at this can you guess what the difference between bourbon and whiskey is?
I'll share the answer in another post.
A huge copper still that is in use. Interesting fact: it's made in Scotland.
Another copper still, there were three in all, all used to make their bourbon. Wish I had listen closer about how this process worked but the word moonshine came up a couple of times in the lecture.
Yes we came home with a bottle. It was that good.
Next tour will include a famous haunted distillery. Well famous because it made an episode of Ghost Hunters.
Beautiful grounds!
ReplyDeleteIf the next one made Ghost Hunters, I've probably seen it. I think I've seen every episode!
Oh Ms. A you have then. They now offer night tours on the week-end just because Ghost Hunters were there.
DeleteThis is fascinating Bonnie, what history and those buildings and the distillery! What a fine and interesting outing. You're on a roll with your new blog now!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Rose! I love going to them especially for the old buildings and seeing the details in them (the old buildings).
DeleteA road trip, a distillery, and coming soon a "Ghost Hunters" distillery-LIFE DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER!!!
ReplyDeleteOh just wait till you hear the comments the sons made about going on the ghost tour, yes life DOES get better ;o)
